Among teachers, students, parents, volunteers and nonprofit leaders, chances are you have a schools champion on your gift list this year. What better gift to give than a green one? Here are 10 of our favorite ideas. Happy holidays from all of us here at the Center for Green Schools at USGBC.

  1. For the reader in your life, Leadership for Green Schools is a brand new book that provides green schools leaders with the tools they need to lead and manage more sustainable schools. Authors Lisa A.W. Kensler and Cynthia L. Uline draw from the fields of sustainability science, the built learning environment and educational leadership to explain what green schools look like, what role school buildings play and why school leaders are "greening" their leadership.

  2. We also love The ABCs of How We Learn: 26 Scientifically Proven Approaches, How They Work, and When to Use Them. Based on a popular course offered at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, it is a fun, informative and actionable read.

  3. For the teacher in your life, consider giving a subscription to Learning Lab. With hands-on lessons on everything from water conservation to transportation systems, this platform offers best in class sustainability content and lesson plans.

  4. Some of our favorite green schools having amazing edible gardens, and you can plant your own at home. Many garden and home goods stores offer kits, or if you want to DIY, you can plant your own mini indoor garden at home.

  5. Registration for the Green Schools Conference and Expo is great gift for any green schools advocate, from the volunteer to the school administrator. The 2017 conference will be held March 21–22 in Atlanta, Georgia, and is shaping up to be another great event!

  6. Reusable water bottles are cheaper, healthier and better for the Earth, making them an awesome gift for practically anyone. Improving health while helping the environment? It doesn’t get more green than that!

  7. Donate to a school you love. We know that many schools struggle with funding, with teachers often having to pay for classroom supplies and technology out of pocket. DonorsChoose is a crowdfunding platform designed specifically for teachers, where you can fund projects at schools in your community.

  8. For the aspiring young engineers in your life, there are some awesome STEM toys out there for kids of all ages. Encourage a love of science, tech and math skills through fun activities.

  9. Reusable sandwich bags are a great way to reduce daily waste, especially for those who pack their lunches for work and school. There are a lot of choices out there that are as functional as they are cute.

  10. The Green Classroom Professional certificate program is a two-hour online course designed to provide preK–12 educators and school staff with the knowledge to identify what supports and impedes healthy and environmentally sustainable learning spaces. It is a great gift for anyone looking to deepen their green schools knowledge and take some simple steps to green their own classroom.
