Green Apple Day of Service event at Duckett's Lane Elementary School

On September 29, 2013, the students, principal and staff from Duckett's Lane Elementary joined Grimm +Parker Architects and Dustin Construction to host and coordinate a student-led scavenger hunt for environmental features in and around the new school. Stations were set up to demonstrate how the building and site are teaching tools for their environmental literacy curriculum. Parents, neighbors and the larger Elkridge community were invited to participate as well.

This Green Apple Day of Service event kicked-off the first school year in the new high-performance school by introducing the school community to the sustainable strategies. Visitors used maps to navigate around the school and site, learning something at each sustainable strategy demonstration station and earning stamps. At the end of the scavenger hunt, visitors were encouraged to fold their maps into a fortune teller game to learn how they can help be good stewards of the environment. Demonstrations on pervious paving, vegetative roofing, rain barrels, native plants, geothermal HVAC systems, recycled content in carpet, recycling and LEED certification were given. Everyone was invited to plant wildflower seeds in the school’s new science courtyard and learn more about native wildlife such as the barred owl, the school mascot, through a visit with a live owl from the local owl conservancy group. Over 400 people took part in the scavenger hunt – a great learning experience!
