Nathaniel Allen
Center for Green Schools Advocacy Lead

This week, the U.S. Department of Education announced that the online public comment period for the Green Ribbon Schools award is now open, and will last through Sept. 14, 2011.

The Green Ribbon School award will be given to K-12 schools that best exemplify America’s transition to a sustainable economy, from graduating environmentally literate students to effectively managing their carbon footprint. The award will acknowledge high levels of achievement in three areas: environmental impact and energy efficiency, healthy environment and environmental literacy.

The U.S. Green Building Council, along with the Campaign for Environmental Literacy (CEL), Earth Day Network and the National Wildlife Federation, encourage interested schools and parties to submit their opinions and feedback for this important program.

More information about the award is available online, or on the Green Ribbon Schools Facebook page.
