Last year, I was able to attend the Greenbuild Conference and Expo in Toronto as a Greenbuild Scholarship recipient.
Greenbuild was my first big conference, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found was a whole world of people who were just as passionate about sustainability as I am. This is an event where the world leaders of the green building industry get together to educate and motivate. The presenters are all very approachable after their sessions, and they make you feel welcome to ask questions and discuss the subject matter. I left Greenbuild inspired, and with a big boost in momentum to seek out a green career.
I now work for Morrison Hershfield in Ottawa, Canada, as a sustainability analyst. I work with the LEED Green Building Rating System and other sustainable projects. We focus not just on getting points or certification plaques on a wall, but on really being as green as possible for our clients. Being able to make a difference in the built environment is very special to me.
I never would have been able to afford to go to Greenbuild as a student without the help of the Greenbuild Scholarship. The decision to apply was one that has undoubtedly had a profound effect on my future. Our scholarship group was very diverse and we represented seven different countries. Since Greenbuild we have stayed in contact and shared our stories and experiences.
I plan to attend Greenbuild again this year in San Francisco.
