School Health Research Library
We have curated a library of peer-reviewed scientific studies from around the world published since 2016, focusing on the school built environment and occupant health and performance. This research builds on the 2017 Schools for Health: Foundations for Student Success report released by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health that synthesizes foundational research about school indoor environmental quality impacts on students and staff.
To help translate this research into action in schools, we have compiled School Health Research Highlights to help school staff and leaders access key findings and actionable strategies on priority topics.

Determinants of Air Quality in Building Environments: A Multi-Regression Analysis and Implications for Open Teaching Practices
DIng, Ding; Si, Xiurong; Zhang, Tiejian; Chen, Feng; Liu, Yiliang; Niu, Zhengzheng.
Through an in-depth examination of multi-regression data pertaining to various environmental factors, this study reveals significant correlations and patterns that are relevant to both educators and environmental specialists.

Characteristics of school children's personal exposure to ultrafine particles in Heshan, Pearl River Delta, China – A pilot study
Mazaheri, Mandana
Hourly average UFP concentrations exhibited three peaks in the morning, midday and evening. Time spent indoors at home was found to have the highest average exposure (1.26 × 104 cm−3 during sleeping) and exposure intensity (2.41). While there is…

Indoor air problems and hoarseness in children
Kallvik
The results showed a significant correlation between the degree of indoor air problem due to moisture damage and the frequency of hoarseness. Significant predictors for the child being hoarse every week or more often were dry cough, phlegm cough,…

Identifying the K-12 classroom's indoor air quality factors that affect student academic performance
Kabirikopaei, Adel
A multivariate linear regression analysis was used to investigate the associations between IAQ factors and student scores using demographic data as controls. The results revealed associations between student scores and ventilation system type,…

Effect of School Integrated Pest Management or Classroom Air Filter Purifiers on Asthma Symptoms in Students With Active Asthma: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Phipatanakul, Wanda
Among the 236 students who were randomized (mean age, 8.1 [SD, 2.0] years; 113 [48%] female), all completed the trial. At baseline, the 2-week mean was 2.2 (SD, 3.9) symptom-days with asthma and 98% of the classrooms had detectable levels of mouse…

Experimental investigation of the potential influence of indoor air velocity on students' learning performance in summer conditions
Wang, Dengjia
Based on the experimental results, the correlation between air velocity/thermal comfort and learning performance was obtained. For example, as the air velocity increased, the learning performance continuously decreased. The results shown that the…

Indoor environmental quality, allergens, and surface biocontamination in tribal homes and schools from Cherokee Nation
Shaughnessy, R
The median cat, dog, and
cockroach allergen concentrations in the fall were medium to high
in homes (0.9-1.6 mg/g) and even higher in schools (0.8-2.0 mg/g).
Increased concentrations were observed in the winter, to levels…

"Sow, Grow, Know, and Show": The Impact of School Gardens on Student Self-Perception in the Mississippi Delta
Holmes, E
While no effect on standardized test scores could be determined, students increased garden knowledge and reported feeling positive about their future, teamwork, and leadership ability. These results were supported by observations of student joy,…

Microbiological and chemical quality of indoor air in kindergartens in Slovenia
Rejc, T
he highest mean concentration of black carbon in indoor and outdoor air was obtained in winter. Concentrations of CO2 exceeded 1000 ppm in 89.3% of the indoor air measurements. The reduction of the number of children in individual playrooms and more…

The real and subjective indoor environmental quality in schools
Meciarova, L
Very high CO2 levels were determined in both investigated schools. In three of four classrooms the statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) were reported between TVOC
levels in autumn and spring. The recommended value for TVOC…
